About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 321 sq km of ancient montane forest in southwestern Uganda. It is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas — nearly half the entire global wild population. No other single protected area contains more mountain gorillas.

The forest is genuinely impenetrable in places — dense vegetation, steep terrain, and tangled undergrowth create the challenging environment that protects these primates. It is also extraordinarily biodiverse, with over 350 bird species and 120 mammal species.

The Four Sectors

  • Buhoma: The original and most visited sector. Best road access from Kampala. First habituated gorilla groups. Good infrastructure, multiple accommodation options. 4 gorilla families available.
  • Ruhija: Highest altitude sector (2,300m). More challenging terrain. Fewer tourists. Known for difficult but rewarding treks.
  • Rushaga: Largest sector with most gorilla families (6+). Best access from Rwanda via Kigali. Also the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500). Best for travellers combining Uganda and Rwanda.
  • Nkuringo: Remote southwestern sector. Spectacular views over DRC. Most challenging terrain. Very few tourists.

Getting to Bwindi

  • From Kampala by road: 6–8 hours via Kabale. Long but scenic.
  • Charter flight from Entebbe: ~1 hour to Kihihi (Buhoma) or Kisoro (Nkuringo/Rushaga). Airstrips are small.
  • From Kigali (Rwanda): 3–4 hours to Rushaga sector. Most popular route for travellers combining both countries.

Best Lodges by Budget

  • Budget ($80–$150/night): Bwindi Community Campsite, simple banda accommodation near Buhoma. Basic but clean.
  • Mid-range ($200–$500/night): Gorilla Safari Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Camp. Good facilities, meals included.
  • Luxury ($500–$1,500+/night): Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Bwindi Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge. Outstanding lodges with superb views and service.

It depends on your access route and priorities. Buhoma is the most accessible from Kampala and has established infrastructure. Rushaga has the most gorilla families and best access from Rwanda. Ruhija suits those who want a challenge with fewer tourists. All sectors offer excellent gorilla experiences.
