The East Africa Tourist Visa

The East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) is a single visa that allows entry to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. It costs $100 for most nationalities and is valid for 90 days with multiple entries between the three countries.

This is a significant saving if you plan to visit two or three of these countries. Without it you would pay $100–$200 in individual visas.

EATV key facts

Covers: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda. Does not cover Tanzania. Apply through any of the three countries' immigration portals. Only available to select nationalities — check eligibility before assuming you qualify. Requires a confirmed itinerary showing travel between the countries.

Tanzania Visa: How to Apply

Apply online at immigration.go.tz before travel — strongly recommended to avoid on-arrival queues at Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) airports. Processing typically takes 3–10 business days. Pay by card online. Print your approval letter and carry it with your passport.

Kenya Visa: How to Apply

Kenya switched to e-visa only in 2021 — on-arrival visas are no longer available. Apply at etakenya.go.ke. Cost is $50 for most nationalities. Processing takes 1–5 business days. The system is reliable but apply at least 2 weeks before travel to allow time for any issues.

Uganda Visa: How to Apply

Apply online at visas.immigration.go.ug, or obtain on arrival. Online processing takes 5–10 business days. On-arrival is possible but slow — apply in advance. Cost is $50 for most nationalities, $100 for US citizens.

Rwanda Visa: How to Apply

Most nationalities receive a free visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL). No advance application required for eligible nationalities. Confirm your eligibility at migration.gov.rw before travel.

If you are transiting through Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airports without clearing immigration, no visa is needed. If you exit the secure zone at any point — to meet a guide, transfer to a domestic flight, or clear immigration — you need a visa. Most safari travellers land, clear immigration and proceed to their safari directly, so a visa is required.

Yes — East African countries routinely see passports with Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda stamps together and this is perfectly normal. Ensure you have sufficient blank pages in your passport before travel (minimum 3 blank pages recommended for a multi-country trip).
