Tsavo: Kenya's Largest Park

Tsavo National Park is actually two adjacent parks — Tsavo East and Tsavo West — covering over 20,000 sq km. Together they form one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Tsavo is less visited than the Masai Mara, which means more space, fewer vehicles, and a genuine wilderness atmosphere.

The famous "red elephants" of Tsavo get their distinctive colour from wallowing in the red volcanic dust. You will see this nowhere else.

Tsavo East vs Tsavo West

Tsavo EastTsavo West
LandscapeFlat, semi-arid, openHilly, volcanic, scenic
Best forRed elephants, large herdsBlack rhino, diverse landscapes
Park fee~$52/day~$52/day
AccessibilityEasier roadsMore varied terrain

Tsavo's park fees are among the lowest in Kenya — a genuine advantage for budget and mid-range travellers. The wildlife density is lower than Masai Mara but the space and authenticity compensate.

Yes, but sightings require patience. Tsavo East is excellent for elephant, buffalo and lion. Tsavo West has black rhino at Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Leopard is present but secretive. Tsavo is not the best choice if your primary goal is guaranteed Big Five sightings — Masai Mara or Amboseli are better for that. Tsavo rewards travellers who want space and authenticity.

Tsavo East vs Tsavo West: Which to Visit?

If you have limited time, Tsavo East is the more accessible choice — flatter terrain, easier roads, and the famous red elephant herds concentrated along the Galana River in dry season. Tsavo West offers more dramatic scenery (volcanic hills, Mzima Springs crystal-clear hippo pools, and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary) but requires more time and a more capable vehicle. A 3-night circuit covering both east and west is the ideal Tsavo experience.

Getting to Tsavo

Tsavo East: 330km from Nairobi (4–5 hours by road). Voi Gate is the most common entrance. Tsavo West: 250km from Nairobi via the Nairobi–Mombasa highway — 3.5–4 hours to Mtito Andei Gate. Charter flights land at Voi and Buchuma airstrips. Tsavo is also the primary overnight stop on a Nairobi–Mombasa overland route.

Best Lodges in Tsavo

  • Tsavo East — Budget: Voi Safari Lodge (classic, government-owned, great views)
  • Tsavo East — Mid-range: Ashnil Aruba Lodge, Sentrim Tsavo East
  • Tsavo West — Mid-range: Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Kenya's first lodge, built 1962)
  • Tsavo West — Luxury: Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp, Severin Safari Camp

They are different experiences. Masai Mara delivers higher wildlife density, more reliable Big Five sightings and the Migration. Tsavo delivers space, authenticity and the red elephant experience that is unique to this ecosystem. For first-time Kenya visitors, Masai Mara should be the priority. For returning visitors, Tsavo offers a compelling contrast — vast, wild and genuinely uncrowded. Many experienced safari travellers rate a quiet morning on the Galana River in Tsavo East as more moving than a crowded Masai Mara vehicle cluster around a lion.
