Why Amboseli?

Amboseli is built on one image: massive African elephant herds walking across open savanna with the white peak of Kilimanjaro rising 5,895m behind them. It is one of the most photographed wildlife scenes in the world — and it is real.

Amboseli has some of Africa's most studied and relaxed elephant populations. The elephants here are largely habituated to vehicles, allowing incredibly close and calm viewing.

Park fee: approximately $60 per person per day

Included in all reputable safari package quotes. Fees are paid in USD at the gate. Kenya Wildlife Service manages the park.

Wildlife

  • Elephant — large herds, extremely relaxed around vehicles
  • Lion — present, though sightings vary by season
  • Cheetah — good sightings on the open plains
  • Hippopotamus — in the swamps fed by Kilimanjaro snowmelt
  • Buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra
  • Over 400 bird species

Kilimanjaro Views

Kilimanjaro is visible from Amboseli on clear days — typically early morning before cloud builds. The mountain is in Tanzania, but its base and summit tower over the Kenyan plains. December–February and July–October have the clearest views.

Getting There

230km from Nairobi — approximately 4 hours by road, or a 45-minute charter flight. Usually combined with Tsavo or the Masai Mara on a longer Kenya safari circuit.

Year-round. Dry season (June–October, January–February) gives best Kilimanjaro views and elephant concentration at water. The wet seasons bring lush green landscapes and dramatic skies for photography.

Amboseli Safari Costs

Park fee: approximately $60 per person per day. Amboseli is typically visited as part of a Kenya circuit combining 2 nights here with Masai Mara (3 nights). A standalone 3-night Amboseli mid-range safari costs approximately $1,200–$1,800 per person excluding international flights.

Best Lodges at Amboseli

  • Budget ($80–$150/night): Amboseli Sopa Lodge, OlTukai Lodge — inside the park perimeter
  • Mid-range ($200–$450/night): Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, Kibo Safari Camp — good game drive access
  • Luxury ($500–$900+/night): Tortilis Camp, Tawi Lodge — private conservancy access, outstanding Kilimanjaro views

How to Get to Amboseli

230km from Nairobi — approximately 4 hours by road, or 45 minutes by charter flight from Wilson Airport. Usually combined with a Tsavo or Masai Mara leg on a full Kenya safari circuit.

Year-round. Dry season (January–February and June–October) gives the clearest Kilimanjaro views and concentrates animals at the swamps. The wet season (March–May, November) brings green grass and dramatic skies but Kilimanjaro is often hidden in cloud. For the iconic elephant-with-Kilimanjaro photograph, come in the dry season and plan your game drive for early morning before cloud builds on the mountain.

Good for four of the five. Amboseli has excellent elephant (some of Kenya's most relaxed and approachable herds), good lion sightings, cheetah, buffalo and giraffe. Rhino and leopard are present but rarely seen. If completing the Big Five is a goal, combine Amboseli with Lake Nakuru (rhino sanctuary) on a Kenya circuit.
